What are the Other Benefits of Chiropractic Care to Pregnant Women?

During pregnancy, several endocrinological and physiological changes happen in a mother’s body as a means of preparing the womb to become the best environment for the developing baby.

Some of the most common benefits of chiropractic care during pregnancy are: control over symptoms of nausea for those who have morning sickness, reduce the time of labor and delivery, relieve neck, back, and joint pain and prevent a potential cesarean delivery.

Chiropractic care is known to provide a more comfortable as well as safer pregnancy and delivery for both the baby and the mother. It will enable proper functioning of the mother’s reproductive organs by stimulating the nervous system. Therefore, it will support the needs of the baby throughout the pregnancy period and also during the delivery.

Establishing alignment and pelvic balance is also another reason to get chiropractic care during pregnancy. A misaligned pelvis may reduce the amount of space available for the developing baby. This is called intrauterine constraint, and this will make it hard for the baby to get into the position needed for safe and proper delivery.

The intrauterine constraint can also affect the mother’s ability to have a non-invasive and natural birth. Posterior positions and breech can interfere during labor, and this may lead to interventions such as C-sections.

However, with the help of chiropractic care, all of these can be prevented by it will assist in keeping the spine aligned and help the entire body work efficiently during pregnancy.

Chiropractic Adjustment: Aligning the Spine

What is chiropractic adjustment?

Chiropractic adjustment, also called spine manipulation or spine adjustment, is a procedure in alternative medicine in which a trained specialist (called a chiropractor) manipulates the spine to correct its certain alignment errors.  The chiropractor uses either the hand or a small instrument in doing the adjustment.  It is believed that correct spinal alignment helps the body to heal itself without more invasive treatments like drugs or surgery.

Chiropractors believe that, over time, the spine becomes misaligned due to age and lifestyle.  These misalignments are collectively known as chiropractic subluxation, and they cause unnecessary pressure on the nerves of the spine.

A56 3

Chiropractic adjustment techniques

Several methods are used by chiropractors to restore a patient’s normal spine alignment.  These are the most common adjustment methods used:

1.  Instrument adjustment.  This technique uses a string-loaded instrument and is the gentlest method of spine alignment.  It is also used on animals.
2.  Motion palpation.  This technique uses only the chiropractor’s hand and determines whether the vertebrae are in their proper positions and moving normally.
3.  Release work.  Using his or her fingers, the chiropractor gently separates the compressed vertebrae and puts them into their proper positions.
4.  Toggle drop.  The chiropractor applies pressure on the affected vertebrae and adjusts the spine.  This technique improves vertebrae mobility.
5.  Lumbar roll.  The patient is positioned on his or her side, while the chiropractor applies a quick thrust to the affected vertebra, returning it to its normal position.
6.  Table adjustments.  This technique uses a special table with a contraption called a drop piece, which causes the table to drop. The patient lies on the table, and the chiropractor applies quick thrusts in sync with the dropping of the table.  This prevents twisting of the newly-adjusted vertebrae.
6. Manipulation under anesthesia.  Also known as twilight sedation, this adjustment technique is used only when the patient does not respond to other techniques.  Manipulation under anesthesia is performed in a hospital and only by a chiropractor who is licensed to do it.

The results of spinal manipulation vary from person to person.  Some people feel calmer, and there are those whose back pains have disappeared.   Posture is improved after a few sessions.  It is also worth noting that a few patients will also experience temporary discomfort and slight inflammation after each session.  This is because the body is still adjusting to the normalized vertebrae positions.  The unpleasant after-effects disappear after a few days.

Safety and risks

Chiropractic adjustment procedures are deemed safe for most people.  It is advised, however, that people who have had a stroke should avoid chiropractic adjustment because manipulation of the spine increases the possibility of another stroke.  Patients who have had cancer in the spine or unstable spine must also refrain from a chiropractic adjustment.  The adjustment might aggravate the patients’ condition.

Risks of frequent spine adjustments include disk herniation (if the procedure is done improperly), stroke (cause by manipulation of the vertebrae found near the neck), and nerve compression.  It is thus important that, after thorough consultation with a physician, patients only go to licensed chiropractors.  The chances of an improperly done alignment are significantly reduced, and the chiropractor can also perform the procedure in a hospital in case of emergency.

Some Interesting Facts About Reiki

Mikao Usui, a Japanese Buddhist, is credited with developing Reiki, a spiritual practice, way back in 1922. This practice has since gained lots of acclaim and has been adapted by numerous practitioners all over the world. This practice generally uses the hands-on healing or palm healing technique to treat patients and for this particular reason, it has been categorized as oriental medicine by many professional bodies.

So what is Reiki? For starters, the word is made up from two Japanese terms, “Rei” which means higher power or God’s Wisdom and “Ki” which means life force energy. So in essence, the term can be translated to imply or mean some spiritually guided life force that’s full of energy. Teachers of this practice are able to transfer universal energy through the palms and in the process, allow for a state of equilibrium which does allow for instances of self healing.

Reiki is therefore a safe, natural and simple method of self improvement and spiritual healing which can be applied to anyone. It is known to treat the whole individual or person including the mind, body, spirit and emotions. Many people who practice Reiki do report a number of beneficial effects such as enhanced well being, more relaxation, peaceful aura and the feeling of being secure and at ease with the surrounding and oneself.

There are basically two branches of Reiki which are quite complimentary. There is the Western Reiki and the Traditional Japanese Reiki. The former does use systemized hand placement techniques while the latter does rely on a more intuitive hand positioning technique. In both branches, they do have a three tiered hierarchy system of degrees that includes the First degree level, the second degree level and the Master degree level in that order of seniority.

reiki principles

It is also worth noting that the ability to successfully use Reiki is usually not taught but is transferred to a student by the Reiki master in a class. This transfer is usually done during a process aptly called “Attunement” where the student is allowed to tap into the unlimited reservoir of “life force energy”. Unlike many other spiritual practices, Reiki has no dogma or beliefs that one must profess to and is therefore not a religion.

The only tenets that the founder of the system advocated for was that people practice some ethical ideals which promote harmony and peace. He did recommend that people desist from anger, stop worrying and be grateful for what they have. He further advised on the importance of being devoted to your work, doing it diligently and being kind to people in whatever you do and finally he recommended that people pray every morning and evening.

Home Treatments for Sciatica: What are Your Options?

Sciatica is a medical term used for severe pain in the lower section of your spine. The pain is caused by any kind of irritation of the sciatic nerve. Most patients feel the pain originating from their lower or lumbar back area to behind the thigh. The severe pain reaches down below to your knee. It’s worth mentioning that the sciatic nerve is the largest one in your body.

The pain caused in sciatica originates from your basic nerve roots present in the lumbar spinal cord in your lower back. In most cases, it extends through the buttock areas to your nerve endings down the limbs. Some people in the medical community call it sciatic nerve pain. It’s important to understand that chiropractic care is the best solution for sciatica. A chiropractor can provide you with relief from pain, and even recommend some effective home treatments for sciatica.

Home Treatments for Sciatica

The easiest and most effective treatment option is to try a cold pack. Most patients experience a significant relief from the pain. In case you can’t find a cold pack, you can use a bag of frozen vegetables. It can act as a good cold pack. You can even ask someone else to massage you in a triangular pattern with a small ice cube over your painful or sore areas. If your skin feels too cold, the person should stop for a while.

When you have taken some cold massages, you should alternate with heat from a standard electric heating pad. This can help relieve some pain. You should never sleep with a heating pad placed on the back. It can cause a very bad burn. In case you don’t own an electric heating pad, you should put a hand towel under some hot water, wring it out, and make sure it’s properly placed on your back. Acupuncture For The Prevention and Treatment of Migraines

Acupuncture To Prevent Migraine

Acupuncture treatment for migraines varies according to the patient’s requirement whether they are experiencing acute pain or need prevention from further migraine attacks.

Here is a detailed description how each situation is dealt with acupuncture.

Acupuncture To Prevent Migraine

Migraine is often triggered by emotional stress. Stress is a result of an imbalance in the autonomic nervous system. The imbalance involves the parasympathetic system that is active during relaxation getting inhibited and the sympathetic nervous system getting excited which controls the brain’s responses to stress.

A special acupuncture technique named SES is used for the purpose of harmonizing the nervous system. Acupuncture needles are placed in the dermis layer of the skin and the needles are stimulated manually while the patient sits and exhales.

This process decreases the muscle tension by activating the parasympathetic nervous system. Mostly the lower leg portion and the forearms serve as the acupuncture points in the technique.

Acupuncture To Treat Migraine

Acupuncture is very effective to treat the acute pain of migraine ranging from mild to moderate attacks. It aims on minimizing the activities of the blood vessels at the time of a migraine attack. The blood vessels targeted are the ones in the neck and head. Both local as well as distant acupuncture points are targeted in western medical acupuncture. Local points lie on the neck and the head whereas distant points are the ones on the hands and feet. Trigger point acupuncture is one such approach to treat the pain and needles are inserted to the points in the muscles in order to release muscle spasm. Usually it involves the acupuncture points of the arms and legs. Local points are stimulated less often as it can lead to a dilation of blood vessels in that portion.

The patient is not supposed to be treated in the lying position. The treatment involving acupuncture techniques is performed while the patient is in a sitting position as it keeps the blood vessels in a greater control which reduces the risk of blood vessels getting dilated due to acupuncture.Sometimes, to constrict the blood vessels, an electric current of about 100 Hz is induced into the acupuncture needles.

Acupuncture reduces pain by stimulating the muscles and releasing endorphins which kill pain naturally. The neurotransmitters are also blocked by acupuncture which prevents the pain signals reaching the brain.

Acupuncture also assists to treat tension headaches, headaches caused by a trauma, cluster headaches as well as headaches associated with sinus, blood pressure or imbalanced sleep cycles.

Chiropractic Procedures for the Sacroiliac Joint

Chiropractic is a therapy which involves performing manual actions on the joints. It was founded in 1845 by English physician Daniel Palmer. While it promotes healing through a holistic approach to body health, this technique is done by twisting joint bio mechanics and releasing segments of the vertebral column by extension at all levels, so that the joints and vertebrae to return to their correct position.

Chiropractic massage focuses on the spine and nervous system and is dedicated to treating a variety of health problems, including back and neck pain, asthma and digestive problems. In addition to recovery of the spine and sacroiliac joint, chiropractors adjust patients’ diet and exercise routine. Chiropractic is based on maintaining effective, normal, functionality for the nervous system. Recovery of any negative effects of an injury, illness or stress may support nervous system recovery. A fully functional nervous system is better prepared to help the body resist disease, infection or stress. In this way, chiropractic attempts to treat the cause of symptoms, not just the symptoms themselves. Long-term benefits of chiropractic use often include the following: maintaining lung capacity, enhancing visual acuity and balance and a better cardiovascular health. Short-term benefits include reduced pain in chiropractic care, a greater motion range and improved quality of life.

The nervous system consists of a network of nerve cells and fibers that transmit nerve impulses to various parts of the body . Because many of these nerve cells are in the spine, back and neck , chiropractic treatment focuses on this area. Having a healthy spine involves muscle flexibility , not only back, but the whole body. Being flexible, it improves blood flow and reduces stress and can prevent further damage and displaced discs or chronic back pain . Flexibility also helps develop muscles and good posture . Chiropractic is especially useful when nerve cells in the spine are damaged due to an injury , illness or lifestyle . This treatment counteracts these harmful trends and capacity back to nerve cells in the spinal cord.

One of the main benefits related to chiropractic care is the fact it manages to reduce symptomatic musculoskeletal problems, including affiliated pain. Researchers suggest that chiropractic care for back pain may be more effective because patients often receive more treatment for long periods of time.

Speaking of chiropractic procedures for the sacroiliac joint, chiropractors can utilize chiropractic manipulative technique (TMC ) to improve a patient’s range of motion. However, many chiropractors will perform extra light tissue massage on the muscles, ligaments and tendons around to enhance the effects of TMC . Much of chiropractors to prescribe patients exercises that can be performed daily at home. These movements bustle attenuates spinal nerve cells without surgery or drugs . Advantage of avoiding surgery or medication is to eliminate their side effects. Chiropractic treatment , therefore, is more convenient as a routine and do not interfere with mental or physical aspects of the patient’s life as he gets treatment. According to the American Chiropractic Association, the exercises help maintain normal motion range and joint flexibility, improving patients’ ability to perform their daily activities without pain.

There are basically two types of chiropractic manipulation for sacroiliac joint dysfunctions:

– Spinal Manipulation (HVLA Thrust), which is also the standard chiropractic adjustment method, and;

– Spinal Mobilization (LVLA Thrust), which is a less forceful adjustment technique.

Since chiropractic is both a science and an art, there are almost as many types of chiropractic doctors as in public hospitals. Each chiropractor care select styles that resonate most strongly with their own interests and philosophical beliefs. However, while many chiropractors adopt and blend several styles of care, common chiropractic techniques fall into 3 categories – sports , care and recovery.

Sports Chiropractic focuses on treating sports injuries and optimizing an athlete’s potential by providing consistent care before, during and after the season or competitive events . Sports chiropractic practitioners put a special emphasis on treating soft tissue injuries using techniques that restore balance and muscle tone. Sports Chiropractic can be both preventive and therapeutic .

Chiropractic care involves a proactive approach to the health of the patient , but also by practicing , so that chronic musculoskeletal problems do not manifest again. Chiropractic care focuses on preventive measures to optimize health , which means that patients visit their chiropractors regularly to receive manual therapy. Chiropractic health care puts control in hands of the patient.

Because of the frequency of motor vehicle accidents and casualties favorable results following chiropractic care and rehabilitation, recovery chiropractic profession has become many doctors’ specialty.

Many patients who receive chiropractic report improved quality of life as one of the most significant benefits. Patient satisfaction regarding chiropractic care and quality of life is often related to the amount of time they spend with the chiropractor and the individualized care they receive. This is true for patients receiving care from other health care professionals such as naturopathic physicians seeking to treat the causes of disease.

There are strong links between obesity and back conditions, which overweight people far more likely to suffer from low back pain or sciatica, not to mention a host of other conditions such as heart disease, diabetes and strokes. A study by the American Obesity Association has shown that of all adults classified as obese, over one third suffer from some form of back complaint. Understanding What To Expect At The First Chiropractic Consultation

Even though every chiropractor is different and it is therefore difficult to come up with a static list of events and questions that one will come across during the first visit, there are numerous similarities nonetheless that are somehow universal to most if not all initial chiropractic visits.

Because most initial visits to a chiropractor are usually necessitated by some form of back or neck pain; most of the time there is need to provide pain relief at the very least during the initial consultation. For most chiropractor practices, they do offer some provisional recommendations for chiropractic care with a more detailed and thorough report being availed during the second visit.

In most scenarios, the initial consultation will last for around 45 minutes or slightly more; keep this in mind when planning for the visit so as to provide the chiropractor with ample time to check on you thoroughly and diagnose you accordingly.

The interview Session

The first thing that most chiropractors will do will be to conduct an initial interview with the patient; this can be done on a one to one basis or can be arranged and done over the phone. This is usually necessary because the profession has an unusual number of chiropractic techniques and practice philosophies; patients are encouraged to engage the doctor with as many questions as realistically possible so as to fully understand the techniques and philosophies of the chiropractor and decide whether you agree with them or not. You are also expected to state your treatment preferences, if any do exist. This interview does not involve a clinical exam but is very critical as it lays the foundation for further interactions between the patient and the doctor. This interview can last for 10 to 15 minutes.

The Clinical Exam

After clearing with the interview session the chiropractor will then go ahead and perform a clinical exam on the client. The clinical exam is performed in three stages, namely; Patient History and Symptoms, The Chiropractic exam and Diagnostic Studies in that order. Diagnostics studies are not a must, but they are dependent on the outcome of the first two stages.

The chiropractor will ask you to fill out some forms that will provide him or her with some background information about your specific condition and the inherent symptoms that you may be experiencing; these forms can be in form of a questionnaire or they may be arranged differently. The chiropractor will require information regarding your family medical history, any pre-existing medical conditions, and any current treatments you are taking. Some of the most common questions that will be posed include when the pain started, where the pain is located, a brief description of the pain; whether it is sharp, throbbing, dull, or searing. He may also want to know the activities that aggravate the pain if any and whether the pain was caused by some form of injury or not.

The chiropractic exam on the other hand does involve some thorough and highly specialized neurological tests as well as some general tests too. Some of the general tests that can be performed during your initial visit may be tests on your blood pressure, reflexes, respiratory system and your pulse. The neurological tests that are commonly done include a test on the range of motion of the affected joint or part, a check on both your muscle strength and tone and an assessment of the integrity of your neurological system. Further chiropractic tests like posture analysis and chiropractic manipulation of the painful body part can all be performed at this stage if deemed necessary.

Depending on the initial results that the chiropractor would have gathered so far, diagnostic studies are usually quite helpful in identifying some underlying structural abnormalities or revealing pathologies that may assist in accurately diagnosing the condition in question. This stage is usually dependent on the findings and the professional opinion of the attending chiropractor. The most common forms of diagnostic studies usually involve an X-ray exam, A Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scan and other slightly more advanced laboratory tests. Most clinics do perform the X-ray exams in-house but do refer patients to an external center for the more advanced exams like the MRI and other lab tests.

A Report

All the above findings usually lead to a specific diagnosis of the problem at hand. Once the chiropractor has determined the condition accurately, he or she will then determine further if the condition will respond to some form of chiropractic care and the anticipated length of time required for the condition to heal. Most chiropractors usually provide this information in written form and will give you a copy for your perusal at home.
